Scrunchies have been around for a long while now.

They highlight in fashion was back in the '80s when all girls and grown-ups wear them as an everyday item.

I wasn't born in the '80s, but I still recall using these accessories as I was very young.

And even though I didn't care a lot about them in the past, now they are back I am crazy about them!

That's one of the things I love the most about fashion. Everything comes back one time or another.

Scrunchies have been a big boom since last year for both girls and women. So I thought it was about time I made a tutorial for you.

They are especially popular between girls between 5 and 10 years old.

So this could be a very special gift for your daughter (plus a very nice excuse to use all those scraps on your fabric bins)

But don't let that hold you back. Because grown-ups all over the place have adopted this trend and they look fabulous!

My sister actually asked for some of these DIY scrunchies for Christmas so I had to make them before then.

How to make scrunchies

Can you make a scrunchie out of a hair tie?

Even though making scrunchies with hair ties is a little trickier than making them with elastic. But making them without elastic is totally possible.

And not as hard as you might think once you get the hang out of it.

A couple of things that will help you to make this process easier will be to have a safety pin for turning the fabric and know how to make an invisible stitch.

One thing you should consider is that the wider the fabric strip for the scrunchie the easier will be to turn inside out.

As for the length the larger the fabric strip the fuller your scrunchie will be.

My advice is to consider at least 3 times the length of your hair tie.

And one of the best things I figure out while I was sewing was how to make them completely closed.

You see, most of the tutorials out there suggest that you close the tube of fabric on its length, then insert the elastic, and then close the ends.

This will leave you with an exposed seam and unless you are using a hair tie instead of an elastic band, it is completely unnecessary.

So, in my opinion, they look cleaner and they are actually a lot easier to sew this way.

Don't worry because if you want to use a hair tie to make your scrunchies I will give you the step by step in this post.

OK so let's do this.

To make your own scrunchie pattern follow these steps.

As we want to have No visible seams (top stitches) on our scrunchies to have a better look.

We are going to sew them with the same process we use to sew our DIY 15-minute Headbands.

If you click on that tutorial you will see the step by step and written explanation, and here it is on video and with our instructions at the bottom.

You will find that this technique is actually easier than others out there and that you will be making tons of hair tie scrunchies in no time at all.

FYI you can totally useknit fabrics such as stretch velvet which is trending so much right now. Or any other kind of knits for that matter.

If so, you might want to read the hack to avoid puckering on knits fabrics.

It is an excellent fail-proof trick to sewing knits without with your sewing machine easy and smoothly.

Another cool thing you can do is to buy a pack of fat quarters and make matching color scrunchies sets. This would be super attractive if you want to sell them.

How to make Scrunchies with a Hair Tie

Making a scrunchie with hair ties is a little bit trickier, but it can also be done if you don't have any elastic on hand.

I would only make them like this if I ran out of elastic.

This is because for me it is a risk that if the hair tie is of a low quality it can brake inside the scrunchie and then I would have to mend it.

Extra work? No thanks.

So make sure your hair tie is of good quality by stretching it a little before you make your scrunchie.

The trick here is that you are going to "wrap" the elastic band with the strip of fabric and then turn that tube inside out.

Check this video to know how to do it.

How to make scrunchies with a hair tie and hot glue?

For this scrunchie, we will follow the hair tie scrunchie tutorial but instead of sewing, we are going to close it with a hot glue gun.

Just because I am an annoying perfectionist I want to warn you that this isn't the best option to make your scrunchies.

Hot glue works wonders to glue some fabrics while with others it simply won't budge.

You may want to consider using a hand stitch to make your scrunchie, but if you feel more comfortable with this option just test the hot glue on the fabric you are going to use first.

To make a scrunchie with a hair tie and hot glue you can follow the same steps we used to sew our hair tie scrunchie.

Except for this time, you will need to glue the seams instead of sewing them. The trick here will be turning the strip inside out because the glue on the fabric might come off.

To avoid this you can glue the strip around the hair tie. Fold the seam allowance and glue it with the right sides of the fabric outside.

My best advice for making a scrunchie with hot glue is to use woven fabric such as cotton or canvas. This way the glue will hold on better.

How to make a scrunchie with a bow?

Depending on the type of bow you want to make to your scrunchie is the pattern you'll need.

In any case, my advice here is to make this bow separate from the scrunchie so you can put it on or take it off to have both styles in one scrunchie.

To make a strip-bow (which is my personal favorite and is trending right now too) use these instructions.

1. First cut a long strip of 24″ by 3″.

2. Fold it in half lengthwise and sew along the edges leaving 2″ open in the middle.

3. Turn inside out and press the strip.

4. Finally, close the open seam with an invisible stitch.

And that's it!
